What makes a fabric functional?
Functional fabric is a textile selected or engineered for a defined use-related property, beyond its visual style. A nylon fabric is not automatically waterproof, and a polyester fabric is not automatically quick-drying: fibre, yarn, construction, finishing and the finished garment all matter.
Stretch and wearer comfort
Stretch may come from elastane or the fabric construction. For trousers and fitted garments, ask about stretch direction, recovery, opacity, wear comfort and any relevant durability test.
Water-repellent versus waterproof
A water-repellent finish may help droplets bead on the fabric surface. A waterproof claim needs an agreed test method and result; garment seams and construction can change overall rain protection.

How do you choose a functional fabric for a jacket or trousers?
Start with garment type, climate, material and weight preferences, required function, budget, quantity and destination market. Compare photographed SKU references by their recorded specifications, then request an actual swatch, confirm the performance test method and acceptance level, and approve bulk terms separately.
